Prayer for the Dying

Also known as Prayer at the hour of death, Commendation of the dying

Said at a deathbed, by anyone present — a priest is not required for this. It can be prayed aloud with the dying person or silently beside them.

Traditional English

May be said aloud, slowly, and repeated as often as is wanted.

Go forth, Christian soul, from this world,
in the name of God the Father almighty, who created you;
in the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who suffered for you;
in the name of the Holy Spirit, who was poured out upon you.

May you rest this day in peace
and dwell in the house of the Lord.
Amen.

The short invocations

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I give you my heart and my soul.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, assist me in my last agony.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, may I breathe forth my soul in peace with you.
